The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today released the following statement following the deadly terror attack near the Temple Mount, which killed two Israeli police officers and left a third injured. The three perpetrators, from the Israeli Arab village of Umm al-Fahm, started shooting at a group of police who were standing outside the compound. After they attacked, they ran back inside the holy site and were shot by Israeli security forces. The victims, Hayel Satawi, 30, and Kamil Shanan, 22, were members of Israel’s Druze community.

Jonathan Greenblatt, ADL CEO, and Carole Nuriel, Director of ADL’s Israel Office, issued the following statement:

            “We strongly condemn this terror attack on Israeli law enforcement officers, carried out by those seeking to sow violence and turmoil and disrupt the fragile status quo at one of the most religiously sensitive sites in the world.

For decades, there has been unceasing incitement against Israel, rife with false allegations about policies and actions in Jerusalem and on the Temple Mount, from Palestinian and Israeli Arab religious and political leaders.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas appropriately condemned the attack in a phone call to Prime Minister Netanyahu. But he and other Palestinian and Arab political and religious leaders must now take concrete action to curb anti-Israel incitement.

We send our deepest condolences to the families of those killed, as well as to the entire Israeli National Police force community, and hope for the quick recovery of those injured.”
